A word about my continuous knowledge development... and fees: We would like to offer some clarity around the question of the fees I charge for what I offer and where they come from. Our fees are usually charged on a daily rate, because it is tangible and convenient to do so. However, we do not sell our time, but rather the knowledge we can give you in that time. The right knowledge is hugely valuable because it results in good decisions, the sorts of decisions that result in actions that maximise what you want and minimise what you don't. Unfortunately good quality knowldege isn't easy to come by, it's time consuming to build and that makes it expensive. It is however hugely valuable: You can give a team all the best facilities and equipment they need to build a bridge and they'll still fail if they don't know what to do.
What's more knowledge has, over the last 10 years in particular, come to the fore in business. In the main this is because advancing technologies have created opportunities for organisations to change at ever increasing rates. To keep up with this advance means changing products, systems, services, markets and so on faster and faster. To make the right change and move in the right direction using the right approach requires knowledge and expertise in a wide range of fields. Sometimes it is just too costly to retain that level of expertise in-house, and so that's where external professional like me add value.
My business is based on knowledge - I invest considerably in maintaining my knowledge base and keeping it current. It's time consuming and expensive and it's the raw material for what I deliver to you. In the past 5 years, I have invested around 60 days per year on knowledge development - that's about 25% of my time - and at considerable cost. This includes a constant flow of workshops and training courses to continually refine and add to my knowledge, and a continuous programme of university courses to ensure my knowledge is as current and leading edge as possible. For example, I recently completed a full time Masters Degree in Organisational Psychology at Manchester Business School. What I gain from this I expect will be of great value to the clients that benefit from my services. Especially when you consider also that this is being built on over 30 years hands-on experience working in organisations from shop floor to senior management and you can perhaps begin to see why what I offer is of value and well received.
Because of this, you can expect to pay daily rates for my knowledge that might at first glance seem a little expensive, but you can be sure it'll be worth every penny. For example, at a recent workshop with the board of a major high street retailer, they became aware that a marketing and promotions campaign they were just about to launch would have sent a psychological message to their customers and employees inconsistent with their organisation's values. They were fortunately able to stop the campaign and redesign it before serious costs had been incurred. Knowledge like this that came from a 30 minute discussion literally save thousands of pounds and lots of wasted time going in the wrong direction.
A useful analogy is something like paying several hundred pounds for a mobile phone handset - the handset itself only costs a few pounds to make, a larger part of the price is to due to the costs of technolgy development. So when you come to pay for a day of my time, please remember that the knowledge I give you is more significant than the number of minutes.
So I hope that gives you an insight into my business model and helps you understand the value of the knowledge I offer - it's the difference between knowing you're doing the right thing or assuming that you are - and that can be a very significant difference!!
